This week Year One were thinking about bird migration. Following on from our discussion last week about hibernation, some of the children wondered what happened to birds during the winter. We discussed how and why birds migrate and thought carefully about how we can support the birds who chose to stay to brave the colder weather. We made bird feeders using apples, lard and birds seed to help to give energy to those birds about to make their long journey to a warmer climate and for the winter garden birds. Mrs Djiallis brought in a few sets of binoculars which the children enjoyed using to try a bit of bird spotting. Most of the children chose to take their feeders home to do some bird spotting at home, did you manage to see any birds using your feeders?
Year Two enjoyed some glorious weather today and set about making the most of it! The children got busy weaving designs to make walls on our tepee and spent time making paella in the mud kitchen, digging 'to the other side of the world', making a road to access our tepee and den building in the conservation area. The level of team work and super social interactions during these mini projects was a real pleasure to observe. Well done Year Two!
Forest School principles were first brought to the UK in the 1990’s from the highly successful Scandinavian practise. The forest schools operate on the principle that children of all ages can benefit greatly from the hands on learning opportunities inherently presented in an outdoor environment. We aim to provide a structured implementation of play based activities and an opportunity for children to explore their natural environment. Building a sense of independence, high self-esteem, risk taking, developing confidence and communication skills are the main objectives throughout each session. Each Forest School session will have a maximum of 15 children and a minimum of two adults including our Forest School trained teacher, Mrs Djiallis.
This is an exciting new addition to our curriculum at Ashfield Park which we are very pleased to be able to offer as part of our commitment to providing a broad and balanced education for your child.
